If you are reading this article, most likely you own an electrical vehicle and are looking at installing an EV charger. In the following paragraphs I will walk you through with instructions and pictures step by step; thus, helping you do a safe and code compliant installation. To clarify, this installation guide is for residential wall mounted EV Chargers. Also it should be noted that this guide is not a substitute for a professional electrical contractor and it is highly recommended to hire the services of a professional because you are working with electricity

STEP 1 - Load Calculation

Firstly, before you start the actual installation process, you will need to calculate the existing load on your electrical service. Calculating tools and tables can be found on our other blog called  “Selecting and sizing the best EV Charger for your vehicle”. Please follow the link above because this step is definitely important. This step will determine the available load and the size of the EV charger.

STEP 2 - Selecting an EV Charger

Secondly, based on the load calculation above you will need to determine the EV charger that falls within the available load. Additionally, you will also want to look at all the extra features you want and  find essential; such as, notifications and remote access. Different types of EV chargers have different charging speeds, different power outputs, and different charging connectors and additional features; therefore, it is important to identify what you want your EV charger to do. More about features on the next step

As an Example , a Level 1 EV charger for a Tesla Model 3 to charge it from 20% to 80% will take 22.5 hours. A Level 2 7.5kW charger for the same vehicle and charging levels will take 7.5 hours.

STEP 3 - Selecting the EV Charger's Features

Home Charger EVFurthermore, having additional features available to monitor and control your vehicle charger is an important factor for many homeowners. Because it is part of the home automation initiative and it can give you more control over charging times, you should think of the extra features that are important to you . Each EV charger can offer different features like time delay charging, charging level monitor, hour of day charging & proffered hours to charge, cell phone and smart device interface, connectivity with other smart devices and IFTTT, power quality, etc.

STEP 4 - Finally, Applying for BC Hydro Rebates

Because you want to ensure that you don’t overspend on your installation, you should find out and apply for all available rebates such as BC Hydro and federal rebates. For a limited time BC Hydro offers great rebates for home and networking EV charger. Up to $700 for home installations which covers the EV charger and installation cost. Make sure you follow the instructions on the BC Hydro page or call BC Hydro directly to obtain all forms and paperwork to be summited in order to avoid delays.

STEP 5 - Finally, Purchasing the Charger and Connectors

Well, everything else is set, and so, its time to buy your EV charger. There are many places where you can buy your EV charger but if you don’t feel comfortable with online purchase it is always recommended that you go to a local distributor or contact BaTCO Tech, your local contact point for British Columbia. STEP 6 - Installation Time

Lastly and as important is the installation procedure. We recommend having an electrical contractor do the installation and provide a certificate of completion with attached warranty. This will help when you apply for house insurance and also Hydro rebates. However, if you feel comfortable doing the job, grab your tools and your tool pouch and let get started. This does require a level of skill.

First, you will need to turn power off to the panel. Make sure you test and lock all sources of power before proceeding. Run the cable or conduit from the electrical panel to the location of the EV charger. How you run it will depend on the location , accessibility and distance. Install the cable or conduit directly to the EV charger or to an electrical box, depending on the manufacturers instruction for your particular model. Install the proper size breaker in the panel; assuming that you have already calculated the proper size cable and breaker size you need to use. Please note that properly sizing the cable and breaker is very important. If in doubt do not hesitate to call us. If you are using aluminum wiring you will need to use wiring compound; however you should read the manufacturers requirements as some EV chargers only accept copper. Tighten your wires to the panel bus par and breaker ensuring you make proper bonding and connection. 

DISCLAIMER: Because of the many accidents, death and loss of property , I can not stress enough how important it is to hire a professional that not only knows but also is certified to work on your electrical system. Working with electricity if highly dangerous; as a result it has been concluded that  80% of house fires in BC are related to faulty wiring and incorrect electrical installations. SAE  J1772 standard has defined four levels of charging stations

  • AC Level 1. This is a basic entry charger that usually comes with the vehicle. This charger can charge 12A @ 120V = 1.44kW ; 16A @ 120V =1.92kW
  • AC Level 2. This is the most common charger used in residential installations. Going up to 80A @ 240V = 19.2kW
  • DC Level 1. Mostly used in commercial , building and workplaces. It will be addressed in the workplace section
  • DC Level 2. Mostly used in commercial , building and workplaces. It will be addressed in the workplace section
EV Charger Connectors

Knowing your vehicle and understanidng the differnet types of charging conenctors is part of the selection process. For example if you need to charge a Tesla from a charger that has a J1172 plug then you will need to puchace an addaptor. So lets list them below:

  • J1172 is  a five pin (L1,L2/N, bonding, Control Pilot, Proximity). Most vehicles will have one of these connectors

  • J1172 with DC Option. Combined Charging Systems (CCS) Combo 1 extension adds two extra high -current DC pins underneats and the two alternating currnet (AC) pins for Neutral and Line 1 are not populated

Charging speed & Range anxiety

Often these two factors are the decisive link when it comes to preffering one charger over another. The speed with which your vehicle will charge will be determined by the size (Amps & Watts) of the charger. The conversion from the amps shown on the charger to the watts showing on your vehicle is bellow

  • 16 amps at 240V : 3,84 kW
  • 30 amps at 240V : 7,2 kW
  • 32 amps at 240V : 7,7 kW
  • 40 amps at 240V : 9,6 kW
  • 50 amps at 240V : 12 kv

Most electrical vehicles take in about 32 amps so with a Level 2 charger it will give you about 30km each hour of charge. This is a good midle of the line charger and quite popular; however , there also the range anxiety that plays a majour role into deciding which charger you will purchace and install. Range anxiety in other words if the fear that the EV batteries will run out of power/charge and leave one stranded. Thus, many people choose to upgrade to a 50 amps cherger which typically adds abbout 59.5km per each hour of charge.

Below are some of the vehicles and their charging times assuming that you will start charging your vehicle 20% and unplug it at 80% using a 32 amps Level 2 charger. Click on the immage to see the details

EV Charger Cost

The cost of the charger depends on the unit you choose and also the feautures you want for convenience. When looking at cost also consider the rebates that are available in British Columbia under the federal and provincial programs. BC Hydro has a comprehensive list of chargers that qualify for the rebates. It is worth checking out and familiarizing yourself with the variety of products available so you can educate your customers and offer advice. Over the years I have come to appreciate a handfull of charger that I always recomend to my clients.

Electrical service sizing and calculation

This step, while not directly tied in into the selection of the EV charger, it is a very important step that will determine if the desired EV Charger falls within the alowable maximum load for your electrical service. This will be one of the first things you will need to do during the process of choosing an EV Charger. As part of this article there will also be an installation roadmap to help ou understand the selection and isntallation steps.

Using the latest electrical code ,section 8 and other coresponding sections, you will need to do a load calculation of the exisitng consummers in the home.
