For Single Family Homes

Specific information for detached homes, townhomes and duplexes. This includes applicable rebates as of February 2021

  • Hybrid: Uses a gas engine and electric motor at the same time
  • Plug-In Hybrid: Uses the gas engine only if the battery runs out. They are not operating simultaneously.
  • All Electric: Uses only an electric motor. No gas or combustion engine will be found on this vehicles

J1772 Plug

SAE  J1772 standard has defined four levels of charging stations

  • AC Level 1. This is a basic entry charger that usually comes with the vehicle. This charger can charge 12A @ 120V = 1.44kW ; 16A @ 120V =1.92kW
  • AC Level 2. This is the most common charger used in residential installations. Going up to 80A @ 240V = 19.2kW
  • DC Level 1. Mostly used in commercial , building and workplaces. It will be addressed in the workplace section
  • DC Level 2. Mostly used in commercial , building and workplaces. It will be addressed in the workplace section
EV Charger Connectors

Knowing your vehicle and understanidng the differnet types of charging conenctors is part of the selection process. For example if you need to charge a Tesla from a charger that has a J1172 plug then you will need to puchace an addaptor. So lets list them below:

  • J1172 is  a five pin (L1,L2/N, bonding, Control Pilot, Proximity). Most vehicles will have one of these connectors

  • J1172 with DC Option. Combined Charging Systems (CCS) Combo 1 extension adds two extra high -current DC pins underneats and the two alternating currnet (AC) pins for Neutral and Line 1 are not populated

Charging speed & Range anxiety

Often these two factors are the decisive link when it comes to preffering one charger over another. The speed with which your vehicle will charge will be determined by the size (Amps & Watts) of the charger. The conversion from the amps shown on the charger to the watts showing on your vehicle is bellow

  • 16 amps at 240V : 3,84 kW
  • 30 amps at 240V : 7,2 kW
  • 32 amps at 240V : 7,7 kW
  • 40 amps at 240V : 9,6 kW
  • 50 amps at 240V : 12 kv

Most electrical vehicles take in about 32 amps so with a Level 2 charger it will give you about 30km each hour of charge. This is a good midle of the line charger and quite popular; however , there also the range anxiety that plays a majour role into deciding which charger you will purchace and install. Range anxiety in other words if the fear that the EV batteries will run out of power/charge and leave one stranded. Thus, many people choose to upgrade to a 50 amps cherger which typically adds abbout 59.5km per each hour of charge.

Below are some of the vehicles and their charging times assuming that you will start charging your vehicle 20% and unplug it at 80% using a 32 amps Level 2 charger. Click on the immage to see the details

EV Charger Cost

The cost of the charger depends on the unit you choose and also the feautures you want for convenience. When looking at cost also consider the rebates that are available in British Columbia under the federal and provincial programs. BC Hydro has a comprehensive list of chargers that qualify for the rebates. It is worth checking out and familiarizing yourself with the variety of products available so you can educate your customers and offer advice. Over the years I have come to appreciate a handfull of charger that I always recomend to my clients.

Electrical service sizing and calculation

This step, while not directly tied in into the selection of the EV charger, it is a very important step that will determine if the desired EV Charger falls within the alowable maximum load for your electrical service. This will be one of the first things you will need to do during the process of choosing an EV Charger. As part of this article there will also be an installation roadmap to help ou understand the selection and isntallation steps.

Using the latest electrical code ,section 8 and other coresponding sections, you will need to do a load calculation of the exisitng consummers in the home. If an electrical service upgrade is needed to accomodate an EV Charger then your electrician wil be able to advise you on the best size for your residence. For references purposes you can use our Price Calculator to get an idea of the cost to do an 100 A, 200A, 400A service upgrade. Since each installation is not the same , the cost will varry based on the location, equipment needed, additional requirements, access, etc. Your electrician will be able to handle all permits and scheduling with BC Hydro for service disconnect and connect.

Due to the fact that most of the revenue EV Charging stations are DC Fast charging stations; they will charge our vehicle within 30 min to one hour.
